Tane Mahuta is the guardian of the forests and birds , however because of this , there is a rift between him and his brother Tangaroa , god of the sea. Tane supplies the people that populate the land with canoes , hooks and nets to catch the children of Tangaroa , the sea creatures that inhabit the waters. Tangaroa fights against this by overturning canoes and flooding the land.                                                                                   Kauri Tree 1.
